Cookie Fries

Buttery chocolate chip dough cut into fry-shaped strips, baked until the edges turn golden and served with a cup of dips on the side.

Cookie Fries

Some desserts get eaten because they taste good. Others get eaten because they make people laugh first. Cookie fries do both. The dough is plain chocolate chip cookie dough. The only trick is the shape: thin strips that look like they came out of a fryer basket.

Each strip has crisp golden edges and a soft middle. That mix of textures is why they work so well for dipping. A cup of warm chocolate sauce, a swirl of vanilla frosting or a bowl of whipped cream turns a tray of them into a party snack.

Getting clean strips

The dough has to be firm before you cut it. If your kitchen is warm, chill the pressed slab until it slices cleanly. Run a sharp knife or pizza cutter through it in one pass rather than sawing. Leave a little room between strips on the pan so the heat reaches every side.

Serving ideas

Pile the fries into a paper cone or a small basket lined with parchment for the full fast-food effect. Salted caramel, strawberry yogurt and peanut butter loosened with a little milk all make good dips. Leftovers keep in an airtight tin for three days and also freeze well before baking.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for dusting

Method

  1. Beat the butter with both sugars until pale and fluffy. Mix in the egg and vanilla until the mixture looks smooth.
  2. Add the flour, baking powder and salt and stir just until a soft dough comes together, then fold in the chocolate chips.
  3. Press the dough into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick between two sheets of parchment. If it feels sticky, chill it for 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. Cut the slab into long, thin strips and space them out on a lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake at 350°F until the edges are light gold and the centers have just set, about 10 minutes.
  6. Cool on the pan for a few minutes, dust with powdered sugar and serve with chocolate sauce, frosting or whipped cream for dipping.
